A Length of Katazome Dyed Cotton: Grapes and Tendrils
early twentieth century
43" x 12 1/2", 109 cm x 31.75
The curved shape of this length of indigo dyed katazome cotton tells us it was taken from a furoshiki or wrapping/hauling cloth. The cloth has been distended from wear and has assumed this shape.
Its pattern of grapes, grape leaves and tendrils is not often seen and as rendered here it is beautifully done. The cloth was stenciled on both its sides in order to create a crisp image however we do see evidence that the alignment of front and back stenciling is a bit off and some blurring occurs.
Still this is a really nice length of old katazome dyed cotton with a delightful and not-often-seen image.
