A Length of Katazome Dyed Cotton: Elaborately Designed Hexagon Repeat
late nineteenth century
33" x 13 1/4", 84 cm x 33.5 cm
This is an elaborately designed length of cloth that show a interesting blending of designs, that of the interlocking hexagon and a boldly stylized cherry blossom inside each hexagon.
The interlocking hexagon shape suggests tortoiseshell, the tortoise symbolizes long life.
The cherry blossoms are a sign of renewal since they bloom in spring--and the tantalizing aspects of their ethereal beauty and their short prime blooming season makes them even more desirable.
This length is slightly worn which is to be expected and it is slightly light faded.
There are some very small snags or holes to the surface, one of which is illustrated here. None distracts from the overall enjoyment of the piece. The photographs here indicate there is a stain to the lower, right hand corner of the piece. The photography exaggerates this as to the naked eye a stain is barely, hardly noticeable.
This is an unusual depiction of interlocking hexagons and the bold, solid depiction of the delicate cherry blossom is also something interesting to see. The addition of a grey tone to the design adds depth and richness.
