A Length of Katazome Dyed Cotton: Cranes in Mirrored Symmetry

$95.00 USD

late nineteenth, early twentieth century
32 1/2" x 13 1/2", 82.5 cm x 34 cm

This complex and richly patterned length of katazome dyed cotton shows a pattern of absolutely charmingly depicted pairs of cranes against a background of richly patterned arabesques and stylized pine trees.

The cranes are shown in mirrored symmetry and the way they are depicted they form a roundel--and the fact that their beaks are entwined gives the impression they are "kissing."

The pattern is enriched by a warm, grey-toned dye and the background is a blue-black.

Cranes symbolize long life and conjugal fidelity as cranes mate for life. Pine trees, too, are symbols of the same two attributes, the reason for their symbolism of a good marriage is that pine needles fall in pairs.

The pattern is lively and large scale. It is beautifully realized and the pattern is made almost solely of small dots.

This is a wonderful katazome length of cloth in good, used condition and with richly rendered overall pattern.
