A Length of Katazome Dyed Cotton: A Lush Field of Delicately Drawn Peonies

$105.00 USD

late nineteenth, early twentieth century
35 1/4" x 13 1/2", 89.5 cm x 34.25 cm

This refined and unusually patterned length of katazome dyed cotton is hand woven from hand spun cotton yarns.

Its texture is exactly what you want to see in an old piece of Japanese folk cloth.

The pattern is delicate yet profuse: it shows a crowded field of blue-toned peonies against a grey colored ground.

The peonies are rendered with a great deal of precision and detail--they almost have the look of an engraving rather than a stencil resist textile.

The level of detail and the narrowness and refinement of the lines that create images on the panel are really impressive.

Quite a wonderful achievement in the art of katazome.
