A Length of Katazome Cotton: Two Variants on Interlocking Circles
early to mid twentieth cetnury
48 1/2" x 13 1/4", 123 cm x 33.5 cm
This is a length of indigo dyed katazome or stencil resist dyed cotton that, by its crisp surface and good condition, seems not to have been used.
It is interesting in many ways, first because the quality of the katazome is imperfect: one can easily see how the pattern repeats by the horizontal lines which demarcate the size of the stencil used to resist the pattern. As well there are smudges and stray bits of undyed cotton. All of this serves to make for a lovely, rustic length of cloth.
The pattern is a very small, all over interlocking circles motif. Zigzag lines run down the length and these lines are the same size and shape as the pattern but there are drawn as dots thus creating the zigzag.
This is an unusual pattern and rustic length in very good condition and would make a very nice acquisition.
