A Length of Katazome Cotton: Plump Stylized Sparrows

This handsome length of indigo dyed cotton shibori shows an interesting pattern. There is a dominant design of bold diamond shapes, perhaps based on the traditional Japanese design called "crossed cords."

The field these diamonds sit on is mottled with a snow-like pattern and on this are highly stylized, plump or well-fed sparrows, fukura suzume, an auspicious symbol conveying good fortune and the wish for richness and abundance.

The length is in good, used condition and seems to be hand woven from hand spun yarns; its texture is sturdy and still durable.

A lovely length of old katazome cotton this one shows a fairly unusual pattern--and one that is meant to pronounce good wishes to its owner.
