A Length of Jishiro Katazome: Bellflowers and Arabesque
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
32 1/2" x 13 1/4", 82.5 cm x 33.5 cm
This is a faded length of jishiro katazome cotton, that is katazome that is designed to be blue on white as opposed to the more readily seen white on blue katazome.
The cloth is hand woven from hand spun cotton yarns and it shows a pattern of what appear to be fairly large-scale Chinese bellflowers against a background of trailing vines or arabesques.
The length is softly colored and shows some surface abrasion--these qualities add to the enjoyment of appreciating this as something that time has touched and that brings with it an unknown history.
This is a wonderful pattern and is an attractive length of katazome dyed cotton.
