A Length of Indigo Dyed Katazome: Delicate Pattern

$75.00 USD

early to mid twentieth century
41 1/4" x 13", 102 cm x 33 cm

This length of indigo dyed katazome cotton is stencil resisted on both its sides which makes it "reversible" as the pattern shown on one side is equally clear on the reverse.

The pattern is sparkling in its use of a dotted background and for the fine spray of radiant dots around the depictions of stylized chrysanthemums.

The larger design is that of a network of broken shippo tsunagi or a traditional interlocking circle motif associated with Buddhism and borrowed from China.

The combination of these two motifs and the way they are rendered has a delicate, shimmering effect that is a delight for the eye.

Very good katazome.
