A Length of Indigo Dyed Katazome Cotton: Hand Spun Yarns

$80.00 USD

early twentieth century
37 1/2" x 13", 95 cm x 33 cm

This is a length of good looking indigo dyed katazome cotton. The cotton cloth is hand woven from hand spun yarns.

Judging from the side slit and the block of fairly unfaded indigo on the bottom, left are of the cloth the length itself was taken from what must have been a han juban or half under kimono.

The design is in small scale and is complex as it shows vertically-oriented bamboo and images of fans with cherry blossoms on them, a hexagon or tortoiseshell with chrysanthemums inside it, snowflakes with a leaf motif and an H-shaped design with a foliate form inside.

The indigo is faded overall and there is some slight surface wear but this cloth is in good, used condition and shows wonderful threads.
