A Length of Indigo Dyed Katazome Cotton: Coiled Ropes
41 3/4" x 12 3/4", 1065 cm x 32.5 cm
This is a treasure: this length of katazome dyed cotton shows a desirable and attractive design, that of a repeat pattern of ropes.
The fanciful placement of the loosely coiled ropes within the structure of the repeated design is beautiful. The overall mood of the piece is light hearted. This kind of pattern immediately draws one's attention as it is visually alluring.
The pattern also speaks to us of traditional design in old Japan, and shows how beautifully everyday objects can be transformed into a wonderfully memorable design.
This is a collectible katazome pattern which is resisted on both its sides which makes from a brighter, more defined pattern and in the process this aspect makes the cloth "reversible" as it looks the same on both sides.
The cotton is dyed a very dark indigo that reads almost black and this is a difficult quality to communicate in photographs. The cloth is very lightly worn and appears as almost new.
