A Length of Indigo Dyed Cotton Kumanozome: Optically Entrancing Stenciled Cloth
late nineteenth century
54" x 13 3/4", 137 cm x 35 cm
This is a generously sized length of a wonderful old type of stenciled cotton known as Kumanozome. This length was dyed in indigo.
Kumanozome refers to a place of origin, an area near present-day Okayama Prefecture: Kumano is well-known for producing this type of optically entrancing cloth.
Kumanozome is immediately recognizable for its decidedly "Op Art" moire effect of undulating, crossing lines. Sometimes contrasting colors and values were used to heighten this effect as is this one which is dyed in red and indigo toned dyes.
This good-sized panel was taken from a futon cover. The scale of the undulating lines is small and narrow and the color tone of the panel has softened and faded from time and wear.
A lovely, collectible piece of distinctly dyed cotton from old Japan in good, used condition.
