A Length of Indigo Dyed Cotton Katazome: European Touch
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
34" x 13 1/2", 86.5 cm x 34 cm
This is a length of indigo dyed katazome cotton that is hand woven from hand spun cotton yarns.
The pattern shows a repeat pattern of stylized chrysanthemums alternating with paulownia flowers, two designs that are often seen on katazome dyed cloth which was used for bedding as this length was.
The interlacing diagonal lines which organize the design give a feeling of a European flavor which may or may not be the case. The truth is, though, that around the time this length was made there was significant contact between Europe and Japan and with that came a flow of inspiration and artistic and design influence between the two areas of the world.
The cloth is in used condition with some surface abrasion, some wear and some fading--not surprising for a cloth of over 100 years in age.
A delightful looking thing.
