A Length of Indigo Dyed Cotton Katazome: Dark Peonies
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
66" x 13 1/4", 168 cm x 33.5 cm
This is a beautiful length of indigo dyed cotton that shows an often-seen motif of peonies. In this case they are rendered in a kind of soulful, shadowy, low-contrast darkness, quite lovely and quite unusual to see.
The peonies are composed of rich, full petals and are set against a background of arabesques that are defined using a series of dots.
There is a softly luminescent quality to this length which holds a lot of visual appeal and overall, although the motif used on this length is often seen, the treatment used to show it is not at all common.
In good, used condition.
