A Length of Hand Spun Cotton Katazome: Ivy and Arabesque
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
43 3/4" x 12 1/4", 111 cm x 31 cm
This is a length of indigo dyed katazome cloth that is hand woven from richly textured hand spun cotton yarns. The dye is deep in tone and lends a rich color to the length.
The pattern is playful, it is that of ivy against a ground of arabesque: the stark light-on-dark appearance of the design is due to the fact that the length was stencil resisted on both its sides, the intention of dyeing in this manner is to create a crisp image.
As mentioned above the hand spun cotton yarns are luxuriously textural and this hand spun aspect of country cloth is prized.
A simply beautiful length of old cotton this is a delight to the eyes.
