A Length of Faux Miura Shibori: Multiple Katazome Stencils

Narumi kongata is a type of stencil dyeing that, with the use of many stencils layered one on top of the the other, very often mimics the art of shibori dyeing. 

Often the images seen in Narumi kongata are complex; in this case we see an all over field of what is meant to look like miura shibori or a kind of puckered, dappled shibori. Two tones of indigo and an added detail of black dye help create the effect of this type of tie dye.

The condition of the length is well-worn with zones of fading and a bit of loss along crease marks.

Because of the complex nature of the dyeing technique used in creating Narumi kongata it is generally, almost always, more costly than katazome, even katazome that uses several stencils.

It is a very interesting old katazome dyed cotton textile with good age and color--and very nice hand spun cotton yarns.
