A Length of Elaborately and Delicately Patterned Katazome: Rich Color
late nineteenth century
35" x 13 1/4", 89 cm x 33.5 cm
What a richly designed and beautifully executed length of katazome dyed cotton.
It is beautiful: the complex pattern shows four colors: a blue ground, black, very-hard-to-see green toned details and orange highlights. White, of course, the fifth color, is resisted and not dyed.
The pattern is that of a fanciful, delicate network of fantasy flowers amid a field of lyrical arabesques.
The complexity of the design beautifully matches the intricacy of the color shading and makes for an extraordinary length of cotton.
The condition is very good for its age.
Really beautiful and recommended.
