A Length of Edo Period Cotton: Vignettes

$175.00 USD

mid nineteenth century
35" x 13 3/4", 89 cm x 33.5 cm

This is a length of hand spun, hand woven cotton that has been stencil dyed with a repeat pattern of wonderful little vignettes that show botanical motifs.

Even though this cloth dates to the 1850s or so it has the look of cloth made in the West a century later.

The colors are warm and the motifs are painterly.

The condition is good and used with just some minor flaws from wear and time, and the unusual nature of the pattern combined with its age make this a captivating and desirable length of stenciled cloth from the Edo period.
