A Length of Double Sided Katazome Cotton: Han Juban Material
early twentieth century
41" x 13", 104 cm x 33 cm
This deeply toned, high-contrast length of indigo dyed cotton katazome cloth is one-half a han juban or a half under-kimono. We can tell this by the cut or notch that is in the middle, right of this length.
The pattern is playful and shows cherry blossoms, pairs of pine needles and a ideogram that is made of small stars. The bright white against the deep indigo is due to the length being stenciled on both sides: this is done intentionally to give a crisp contrast of tone--and the piece is also "reversible."
In very good condition this is a nice length of indigo dyed katazome that shows a design whose contrast between natural and geometric forms is a bit jarring and interesting to look at.
