A Length of Deeply Toned Kumanozome Cotton: Indigo Moire Pattern

$125.00 USD

late nineteenth century
36" x 13", 91.5 cm x 33 cm

This is a very good length of a type of stenciled cotton known as Kumanozome.

Kumanozome refers to a place of origin, an area near present-day Okayama Prefecture: Kumano is well-known for producing this type of optically entrancing cloth.

Kumanozome is immediately recognizable for its decidedly "Op Art" moire effect of undulating, crossing, vertical lines. Sometimes contrasting colors and values were used to heighten this effect.

In this case, the moire effect is created by stencils and indigo blue color tones: These tones and their lines are dense and strong in value so they create a strikingly bold effect.

The length is in very good, seemingly unused condition and is a good example of its kind.

Recommended.
