A Length of Deep Blue Toned Katazome Cloth: Stenciled on Both Sides

$70.00 USD

late nineteenth, early twentieth century
41 1/2" x 13", 105.5 cm x 33 cm

This is a length of deeply toned katazome cotton which was dyed in indigo; the cloth was stenciled on front and back which makes it "reversible."

The pattern is playful and restrained in its scale. It shows pairs of squares which are no doubt masu or grain measures which symbolize abundance. These masu are paired with maple leaves. The effect is delicate.

There are two mending patches, one on each selvedge side, and details of the surface of the cloth that is backed with these patches are shown on the accompanying detail photos here.

This is a fairly unusual design and one that is subtle but carries with it nice symbolism.

It is in good, used condition with still very nice richly toned indigo color.
