A Length of Complex Dyed Katazome: Arrow Feathers as Disc
late nineteenth century
33" x 13 1/2", 84 cm x 34 cm
This sturdy length of hand woven cotton cloth is katazome dyed in a complex and interesting pattern.
A network of octagons creates a base or background for a curious image: it seems to be a roundel made from either arrow feathers or the components of a folding fan, both of which are traditional Japanese design images.
The color is rich: we see deep indigo color, a warm grey tone and small but insistent details of iron oxide based reddish color. The combination of these color elements in relation to the complexity of the design makes for an interesting length of cotton cloth. This was taken from a futon cover.
An unusual and complicated design, something very sophisticated in the form of katazome.
