A Length of Brown and White Striped Stenciled Cotton: Festival Cloth
mid twentieth century
94" x 13 1/4", 238.75 cm x 33.5 cm
This is a quite long piece of beautifully yet simply decorated cotton, the design being alternating brown and white stripes of the same width.
Most likely this cloth was intended to be used at a Buddhist temple festival since striped cloth like this often appear in accessories around a temple during celebrations. This cloth was patterned using a stencil with a mineral based pigment being applied directly to its surface.
The pigment, being seemingly superficial, may not be stable when washed, and some of the streaks and puddles of pigment seen on the surface of the cloth lead us to conclude this.
Still, a really lovely, wonderful old cotton cloth from another era.
