A Length of Boldly Patterned Jishiro Katazome: Tortoiseshell
early twentieth century
56" x 12 3/4", 142.25 cm x 32.5 cm
This length of katazome cotton with its striking design is dyed as blue-on-white or jishiro, a less-seen type of katazome dyeing that the white-on-blue.
The design is as bold as the still-vibrant color tone: it shows a large-scale hexagon pattern that contains borders of dots with a vibrant interior image of a six pointed flower shape.
The design is loud and beautiful and there is an embedded conveyance of good fortune in that the hexagon is a stand-in for the tortoise shell or a wish for a long life.
There are some very small holes or "pits" to the surface but none that detract from its overall interest. One is shown on the detail photo here.
Wonderful.
