A Length of Attractive Katazome Cotton: Pine Roundels
$75.00 USD
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
27" x 12 1/2", 68.5 cm x 31.5 cm
This is a handsome length of indigo dyed katazome cotton that is hand stitched from two pieces.
It shows a pattern of white colored pine branches rendered as roundels set against a dark-toned background of black arabesque on a deep blue base.
The pine is a symbol of longevity in Japan so this length of old katazome cotton conveys a wish for a long life. It was taken from a futon cover and it might have been part of a bridal trousseau.
A beautiful example of katazome dyed cotton which is rich in color, tone and symbol.
