$105.00 USD

kearly twentieth century
60 1/2" x 12", 154 cm x 30.5 cm

This is a boldly patterned length of katazome dyed cloth that shows a large repeat of tortoises and cranes which are all rendered in great detail--and with surprises in the form of rich symbolism.

By themselves, the tortoise and crane each symbolize long life. Together they call upon a wish for a life of 10,000 years.

However there is another layer of symbolism: seen on their bodies is an array of images called takarazukushi which are, essentially, luck-bringing treasured objects.

Shown on the back of the tortoise and crane are the Buddhist flaming pearl, clove buds, a granary or warehouse key, a treasure pouch, a counterweight, a cape of invisibility, scrolls of knowledge and a wish-fulfilling mallet. Just wonderful!

Additionally scattered in the background is another layer of symbols in the form of plum blossoms that mean courage as they are the first flower to burst forth from under ice and bamboo which translates as resilience: it bends but does not break.

The design is enhance by faint tones of grey and orange and the background is a deeply dyed indigo color.

This is a complex and wonderful length of old katazome dyed cotton and one full of great surprises.
