A Generous Length of Wasarasa: Indian Inspired Japanese Cotton

$85.00 USD

early twentieth century
76" x 13 1/2", 193 cm x 34 cm

This length of cloth dates probably to either the Meiji (1868-1912) or Taisho (1912-1926) era when this type of figured cotton cloth of this coloration and richly patterned design was popular.

It is a kind of wasarasa or a Japanese-made Indian trade cloth-inspired cotton: on this length we see a tight field of decorative roundels, the roundels suggest designs found on traditional Indian trade cloth that was commissioned for the Japanese market.

The cotton here seems to be hand spun and hand woven, the texture of which adds interest to the pattern of this beautifully colored and designed length of cloth.

Absolutely enchanting to look at this is a visually distinctive early twentieth century cloth of which this is a very fine example.
