A Generous Length of Katazome Dyed Cotton: Rare Clematis Pattern
early twentieth century
84" x 13", 213.5 cm x 33 cm
This is a deeply toned, indigo dyed cotton length of katazome cloth that shows a fairly often seen pattern, that of flowers.
However this flower is interesting because it is rarely depicted on katazome patterns, it is a clematis.
The cloth is still sturdy: the colors are still strong, almost as they were when it was originally dyed a hundred years ago.
The flowers are rendered with a kind of joyful simplicity which, when viewed against the background of countless small dots, makes their appeal even more so.
A good piece of cloth for its lovely design which is made even better by its good, used condition and rare image.
One small tear, unnoticeable, is depicted on the last detail photo shown here.
Recommended.
