This is a generously long piece of hand spun, hand woven cotton cloth that was indigo dyed in the katazome method.
The pattern is an interesting play on motifs that convey a wish for long life: both the pine and cranes suggest this notion and how interesting it is that the stylized crane motif is arranged in sets of three, creating a roundel.
The pine is depicted as a young pine with its roots intact, a nod to the idea of hoping for many children.
As can be seen there is loss to two sections of the selvedge and the indigo tone has oxidized to a steely blue grey color.
The fading and wear to the piece bring out the texture of the hand spun cotton yarns, always good to see.
