A Generous Length of Beautifully Faded and Flawed Katazome: Powder Blues
late nineteenth century
72" x 13 1/4", 183 cm x 33.5 cm
This is a faded, beautifully marred beauty, it is a generously-sized length of old katazome dyed cotton cloth which shows the beautiful hand spun yarns that make Japanese folk textiles so rich and so appealing to the eye.
The fading adds soulfulness to the overall effect.
The dyeing is flawed as can be seen by the large areas of white-ish blurs. The marriage of these flaws with the overall fading beg for a new type of appreciation for this length of hand dyed cotton.
The pattern is complex as it is emblazoned with large, floral elements that dominate a field sprinkled with smaller, trefoil designs and arabesques.
This is a spectacularly attractive length of old katazome cloth and it is a delight for the eyes.
