A Fragment of Old Kumanozome: Optically Entrancing Stenciled Hand Spun Cloth

This is a square-shaped fragment of a wonderful old type of stenciled cotton known as Kumanozome.

Kumanozome refers to a place of origin, an area near present-day Okayama Prefecture: Kumano is well-known for producing this type of optically entrancing cloth.  

Kumanozome is immediately recognizable for its decidedly "Op Art" moire effect of undulating, crossing lines. Sometimes contrasting colors and values were used to heighten this effect as is this one which is dyed in red and indigo toned dyes.

This fragment is hand woven from wonderfully textured hand spun cotton yarns. It was taken from a futon cover.

As can also be seen and expected, the cloth is slightly faded from wear and its surface has slight, overall abrasion which has softened the original brownish grey colors from bold to gentle.

A lovely, collectible piece of distinctly dyed cotton from old Japan in good, used condition.
