A Fragment of Old Katazome Dyed Cotton: Beautiful Hand Spun Yarns
late nineteenth century
22" x 13", 56 cm x 33 cm
This is fragment of old katazome cloth that shows a playful and sophisticated pattern of flowers on a field of arabesques.
What is so ingenious about this design is that the line of flowers on the left hand side are rendered as light; the same flowers on the right hand side are dark.
The cloth itself is soft and hand woven with beautiful hand spun cotton yarns. There is some wear and pitting to the surface of the cloth and there is light fading, too. Still, these characteristics do not deter from appreciating this century-old fragment of cotton in fact they aid in appreciating it more.
Wonderful for its yarns, for its design and for its age.
