A Fragment of Katazome Cotton: Large Scale Cranes
early twentieth century
18 1/2" x 13 1/4", 47 cm x 33.5 cm
This is a small fragment of katazome dyed cotton that shows two large-scale cranes shown more or less in a flipped, mirror image. The cranes are animatedly drawn and convey a kind of life force--a lovely and unexpected aspect of this small fragment.
Cranes in Japanese design signify a wish for a long life and as cranes mate for life they also are a symbol of conjugal fidelity. The stylized pines--also shown here--are also symbols of long life and marital happiness: pine needles fall in pairs.
A charming fragment of cloth packed with symbolism and good intentions this also has rich visual appeal.
