A Faded Length of Katazome Cotton: Spirited Pattern
early twentieth century
42" x 12 1/2", 106.5 cm x 32 cm
This length of duo toned indigo dyed katazome cotton shows a good deal of surface wear which has significantly softened and blurred the color of the length: the length is faded and definitely bears the mark of a hard life of service.
The pattern is duo-toned as mentioned above. The playful images of auspicious noshi, wide brimmed hats, scrolls and Buddhist flaming pearls are colored in a grey dye.
The length is hand stitched from two separate pieces, one of which shows a bit of ingrained dirt that has permeated the fabric.
Still, this is a lovely length of cotton with a spirited pattern.
