A Child's Padded Kimono: Beautiful Orange Colored Boro Cotton Lining

$125.00 USD

early to mid twentieth century
36 1/2" x 40 1/2", 93 cm x 103 cm

This padded child's kimono is a study in contrasts.  Its proper exterior is one of a dark, plaid, woven cotton.  Its proper interior, shown in many detail photos attached, is a burst of sunshine with its faded tangerine and coral pink colored cottons.

These oranges and pinks may or may not be the result of dyeing with safflower or benibana.  The fading on the cotton and the manner in which these faded pieces are put together are the visual joy of this child's garment.

Because of its wonderful, warm colors, the kimono almost issues forth light, and when hanging on the wall it catches it beautifully.

Showing wear consistent with its age, this is a wonderful little boro garment with an unselfconscious beauty that can only be appreciated through the perspective of time.
