A Length of Indigo Dyed Katazome Cloth: Lone Diagonal Patch
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
64" x 13", 162.5 cm x 33 cm
This is a length of indigo dyed cotton katazome cloth that is shown on its proper reverse side to highlight the attractive, long and narrow, diagonally-placed patch to the center of the piece.
The pattern of the katazome is one of interlocking octagons but as seen on the reverse side the pattern is blurred: the proper side shows a crisply detailed design.
There are points of loss along the right hand selvedge area of the length, shown on the accompanying detail photos.
This is a simple yet visually appealing length of old, hand spun, hand woven cotton that was taken from a futon cover which was undoubtedly used hard over decades.
Lovely.
