A 19th Century Hand Spun Cotton Box Cover: Resist Dyed
$35.00 USD
late nineteenth century
28 1/2" x 29 1/2", 72.5 cm x 75 cm
This well-used and broken cross-shaped cloth was used to cover a box.
It is intrinsically beautiful with its wonderful, hand spun cotton yarns and its resist dyed indigo color. The cloth itself is of very good quality, and for those interested in using this in an art or craft project it would be a wonderful aspect of your palette.
The indigo color is warm and rich and the resisted decoration is lovely: a large circular motif is stylized wisteria and two kanji or Chinese characters grace one of the two stitched flaps.
Wonderful, old cloth.
