A Length of Sumptuously Colored Katazome Cotton: Phoenixes

$145.00 USD

late nineteenth century
37" x 13", 94 cm x 33 cm

This is a good-sized fragment of katazome dyed, hand spun, hand woven cotton that bears an unusual, predominant color, that of a soft yellow tone.

This yellow color is used as the background for the indigo stencil dyed pattern of intricately designed and executed phoenixes alighting on paulownia flowers, a rich repeat with a graphic impact.

Colored katazome cloth such as this one--that is to say those whose dominant tone is such a rare one as yellow--is not easily found. In addition to its wonderful artistry and its obvious beauty it is this yellow color that makes this fragment the desirable piece that it is.

Please note a faint, almost-impossible-to-see stain to far upper right corner, shown in a detail photo here.

In good, used condition, this is certainly a piece of katazome cotton to consider adding to your collection. Please note two small holes as noted on the accompanying detail photo.
