A Length of Katazome Dyed Cotton: Elaborate Repeat Pattern
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
36" x 13", 91.5 cm x 33 cm
This is a length of katazome dyed cotton that shows an elaborate take on the interlocking hexagon motif called kikko tsunagi, a design that evokes tortoiseshell and conveys a wish for longevity.
Inside each of the complex hexagons is a stylized chrysanthemum, the added grey tone that tints the light areas of the design add some richness to the overall look.
The dark areas are of a deep indigo shade, almost black in tone.
There is one butthole-sized tear to the piece, shown on the accompanying detail photo and otherwise the cloth is in good, used condition.
