A Patched Boro Kaya: Two Panels of Indigo Dyed Hemp

$165.00 USD

ca. early twentieth century
62" x 26", 157.5 cm x 66 cm

Kaya is a laxly woven cloth--usually hemp or ramie--that was used as mosquito netting in all regions of old Japan.

Shown here is a two panel piece which was taken from a large tent; the tent would have been hung over one's bed, like this one here.

The color is a worn and faded indigo blue, and since this piece is rural and old, there is fading and wear to its surface; this adds beauty and luster to the piece.

As well, there are five cotton patches hand stitched to the kaya, which add visual interest, and indicate how hard this kaya was used.

The color is wonderfully warm and the patina from wear has softened and burnished the surface of this two panel boro textile.

Just lovely.
