A Long, Pieced Length of Patched Kasuri Cotton: Kasuri Warp and Weft

$85.00 USD

early twentieth century
73" x 12 1/2", 185.5 cm x 31 cm

This is a length of kasuri dyed cotton that is composed of five pieces that are hand stitched together. The cotton is supple and drapey in the hand; it has a beautiful texture.

The cloth shows three different patterns, each similar to one another and very possibly from a bolt of cloth that showed changing patterns along its length. One of the patterns shows an interesting crane/pine tree hybrid which, of course, conveys a wish for a long life as both the crane and the pine tree symbolize longevity.

There are four mending patches affixed to the surface, one of them long, narrow and colorful and placed on the upper left-hand side of the length.

Note the vertical lines are done using kasuri yarns and add a brushy or painterly quality to the overall look of the cloth.

This is beautiful!
