A Length of Stitched Cotton Pieces: Wonderful Stripes and Patterns

This is super charming: it is a panel from a what must have been a sleeping mat and it is hand stitched from 11 individual pieces of lightweight, somewhat fragile pieces of cotton.

The length shows eight different patterns of cloth, six being stripes, two being a kind of machine-aided kasuri or ikat that was popular in the 1920s.

The pieces of cotton were cut with pinking shears, very unusual, as very few Japanese textiles show this type of scissors being used.  

The color palette of the striped cloth is restrained while the kasuri cloth shows a bit more contrast and is slightly more playful in spirit.

A really lovely length of old cloth from Japan, and one that would look great in almost any home.
