Two Tailored Pieces of Tsutsugaki Dyed Cotton: Waves

$85.00 USD
late 19th century
each piece: 53" x 8 1/2", 134.5 cm x 21.5 cm

These two wedge-shaped fragments are taken from a larger textile, probably the collar parts of a yogi which is a kimono-shaped duvet. They were part of a scene of a tumultuous ocean full of tossing waves, sea foam and bubbles.

This ocean scene was dyed in the tsutsugaki method which means it was drawn freehand using rice past resist--the artisan who created this scene was skilled as can be seen by the strong, even white lines and the clarity of the image.

The cotton is of good quality--is hand spun and hand woven and because of its texture this type of high quality, old cotton provides a superb base for such expert hand dyeing.

This is a really well done example of tsutsugaki dyeing and the fragments are lovely caption from a larger, complete image.
