This a set of three balls of undyed cotton: each has their own color tone based on age and wear. When seen in person the tonal variation between them is not as pronounced as in these photos.
One of the balls featured on the final photo here seems to be a long filament of knotted thread and appears to have been culled from used sources.
They are nice to look at and would be interesting to put to use!
