This is a Western-style, Japanese embroidery sampler where four-and-a-half of the fifteen squares on the design grid are completed. The design grid is hand drawn in pencil.

The sampler seems to aim to demonstrate different embroidery techniques and most of the images are of a floral nature. Very charming is the cell that shows spiderwebs.

The base is machine stitched of two pieces of cotton and the cotton shows some foxing. However, when seen in person, the foxing is not as noticeable as what is shown in the photos here: it was not easy to match the original in photos.

This is a charming piece of work that shows the process of learning something new and acquiring a new skill--and it has visual appeal as well.
