An Oversized Piece Constructed Drawstring Bag: Hand Loomed Cottons
ca. late nineteenth, early twentieth century
28" x 18" x 18", 71 cm x 45.5 cm x 45.5 cm
This is a wonderful and very large drawstring bag that is constructed from about a dozen pieces of hand loomed cotton, hand stitched on the bias.
The overall color tone of the bag is somber and the fabric pieces used in the construction are a mixture of stripes and simple kasuri, or ikat cottons.
The condition of the bag is varied: on the whole the bag is good-looking, however there are some coin-sized holes and a palm-sized area that is rather "chewed up," probably from wear.
Still, this is a lovely--and very large--bag, and one that is very much a memory of every day life in old Japan.
