An Itajime Shibori Diaper or Mat: Layered and Stitched
$55.00 USD
mid twentieth century
26 3/4" x 16", 68 cm x 40.5 cm
This stitched mat--or diaper--is made from a few layers of deeply toned itajime shibori dyed cotton. The pattern is one of hexagons inside which is a six pointed snow flower.
The hexagon shape is significant, especially when it is on a cloth intended for children, because it is shorthand for tortoiseshell which, in turn, is a symbol conveying a wish for long life.
Look carefully and the random seaming and cuts of the shibori as its final placement has a charming visual randomness that is very appealing to the eye.
Seemingly unused and in very good condition.
