An Inside-Out Kimono: Beautiful Black Stitching and Subtle Patches
early twentieth century
shoulder to hem x sleeve tip to sleeve tip: 47" x 48", 119.4 cm x 122 cm
This old cotton kimono is shown inside-out to highlight the lining which is heavily stitched using black cotton thread. It also shows nice patching in colored cloth similar to the base. The subtlety of the low contrast effect is attractive.
There is real artfulness in the making of this piece however it is unclear how much consideration was given. The fact that the patches and the base cloth "match" in color and tone to some extent, we can assume the maker was using judgment and restraint when patching and stitching this kimono.
The effect is wonderful and this kimono would look fantastic hung on the wall as in the lead photo--but as it is still quite sturdy and has a good deal of life still in it, it is a very wearable item.
The proper outside of the kimono is in a dark, subtle cotton and it is the inside of the garment where the rustic beauty is shown.
