An Indigo Dyed Cotton Shibori Han Juban: Hand Spun Cotton

$245.00 USD

late nineteenth, early twentieth century
28 1/2" x 25", 72.5 cm x 63.5 cm

This simple and beautiful indigo dyed cotton garment is a han juban which is a half under-kimono.

It is hand stitched from hand spun, hand woven cotton, the cotton being rather gauzy, lightweight and clingy. It is a lightweight cotton.

It is entirely shibori dyed: the body is dyed in small, evenly spaced dots that vary in tone giving a dappled effect. The collar area shows larger circles of shibori which is a beautiful contrast to the small dots of the body.

The indigo color is deep and rich and the han juban is in quite good, used condition.

The clingy cotton may be difficult to wear if that is what you are thinking but this is a beautiful old shibori garment that would also give a lot of pleasure as an art object.

Just beautiful.
