An Indigo Dyed Cotton Noren: Shop Sign
early twentieth century
19 1/4" x 38 1/2", 48.5 cm x 98 cm
This is a beautifully simple, indigo dyed cotton noren, a kind of hanging door covering, which in this case is a shop sign. This noren would have been hung outside a shop to indicate the shop is open.
The cotton is hand spun and the noren is hand stitched from three pieces of cotton, each one which is resist dyed with one character which announces the name of the business.
The cotton is thickly woven and there is a small hole to the noren which can be seen in the accompanying detail photos.
A wonderful thing, this is a delightful noren from old Japan in good, used condition.
