An Indigo Dyed Cotton Noren: Re-Purposed Hanten or Jacket

$195.00 USD

mid twentieth century
50" x 38", 127 cm x 96.5 cm

This is a noren which is a traditional Japanese curtain of sorts, one that was used either in doorways in lieu of a door or hung in front of shops, functioning as a shop sign as a signal the business was open and to mark a transition from the outside world to an interior space.

This is a highly unusual noren because it is machine stitched from a recycled, resist dyed happi or hanten, a kind of jacket.

The jacket is undone, splayed configured in such a way that it shows both the front and the back of the original hanten; its two wide panels contain the collar pieces of the hanten which add width to each panel.

As can be seen the white, resisted, undyed areas of the hanten show ingrained dirt from wear; there are some areas of zigzagged machine stitching which are easily seen by looking at the detail photos here.

An unusual noren--and recommended.
